Our Creative Delivery Director, Joanna, ensures that all client work is delivered on time, on budget and of the highest quality. But what makes her tick? PR and Content Executive, Charlotte, sat down to chat all things agency life.

1. How did you kick-start your career?

I was always interested in marketing as a career even whilst at university. After graduation I was working in a non-related sector and saw a job advertised as a receptionist for a local advertising agency. I applied knowing full well I didn’t want to be a receptionist, and somehow talked them into offering me a trainee media planner/buyer job! And the rest is history…

2. What is your favourite thing about agency life?

Variety is key as no two days are the same, and the sense of achievement when a campaign comes to life is also brilliant. Agency banter is also a source of daily amusement!

3. What has been your biggest achievement?

The fact that I have risen through the ranks at Narrative makes me proud, from account manager to media buyer, then from head of media to the role I’m in now – creative delivery director. Forming, nurturing and evolving the creative delivery team is personally something I’m really proud of.

4. When did you think ‘this career is right for me’?

It took me a little while to gain confidence in myself in the marketing world, but irrespective I think I got the bug pretty much straight away. I left agency life briefly and missed it so much I was back after six months!

5. How would you describe yourself?

Straight talking, honest and loyal.

6. What is a quote that you live by? 

What will be will be! 

7. What tool or software makes your work life easier?

Trello without a doubt! I not only use it for work but also for my personal lists – everything from TV recommendations to general life admin goes on a Trello card.

8. What does your current work routine look like?

My work routine isn’t quite the same given that most days I’m currently working from home. It’s a case of juggling Zoom calls, a new puppy, the school run, managing my team, meetings with the management team to drive the business forward and, of course, delivering on client work too!

9. Why Narrative? What do you love the most about working at Narrative?

The culture and the people. There are many reasons why we were voted 37th best place to work in the North East in 2019 and most of them focus on our amazing staff and/or the fantastic culture at the agency.

10. What are your top tips for working in the industry?

In terms of getting into the industry, never underestimate the power of work experience. Over the years we have taken on many good employees as a direct result of them joining us for work experience or as an intern in the first instance. After that it’s just down to good old hard work and building relationships.
