We were recently joined in the office by Hannah, who was visiting us for work experience. With a keen interest in public relations, Hannah wanted to learn more about the role of our PR department and how their work supports wider marketing strategies. Here she discusses her experience with us.
My name is Hannah and I’m in my final year at Sunderland University studying Media, Culture and Communication. I spent four days at Narrative on work experience in October.
Despite being in the midst of endless essays and dissertation planning, I believe it’s equally important for me to engage in work experience and think carefully about my next steps.
I consider myself to be quite a creative person, therefore a role that incorporates creativity has always appealed to me. In my spare time, I enjoy managing and writing content for my own blog.
At university, I’ve enjoyed studying the public relations module. It teaches the fundamental aspects of PR – such as writing news releases and creating campaigns. Whilst this is informative, I wanted to gain an insight into the reality of the role to ensure PR is something I would enjoy doing day-in, day-out. Spending time with Tori and Laura in Narrative’s PR and Content team was incredibly informative as I was able to gain a greater understanding of what a role in PR really entails.
During my time at Narrative, I was set several tasks, such as conducting research online and writing draft copy. I also attended meetings and made contact with all team members to find out more about their responsibilities as part of a marketing agency.
I also found out a lot more information concerning the wide range of positions available in marketing, design and communications – some I never even knew existed!
My time here has also helped me step to outside my comfort zone and talk to lots of new people. As a rather quiet person, this is something I find quite challenging. However, everybody was friendly and welcoming which put me at ease instantly! I believe my confidence has grown as a result.
In my opinion, work experience is hugely important and worthwhile. Not only does it give you the opportunity to observe life in a real working environment, it also displays your commitment towards a career in this field.
My time at Narrative has confirmed that I would like to pursue a career in marketing, design or PR after I graduate from university next summer.
