As the end of the 2010s draws closer, the Narrative team are not only thinking about our new year’s resolutions, we’re also wondering what the new decade will bring in terms of design trends. Our senior creative, Sharon, has scoured the web and found her top 5 picks of what you can expect from the 2020s!

  1. Colour transitions / gradients

For the last couple of years, gradients have been a key trend in the design world and this is going to continue into 2020. Whether being used as backgrounds, overlaying images or within logos and icons, designers are always finding new ways to incorporate this trend.

  1. Retro styles

Styles inspired by the 1950’s and 60’s are back for 2020. Think muted, earthy colour palettes, retro effects such as dust and noise, black and white photography and hand drawn ink illustrations. The trend will be seen in both web and print design as well as in typography, lettering and brand identity.

  1. Combining photography with illustrations

Overlaying simple 2D illustrations over images or replacing part of the image with the illustration will continue to be a major trend in 2020. What started as a fun trend has since become a bit of a hit on the web and within print design.

  1. Line art illustrations

Line art is a simplified illustration style great for creating clean, elegant and creative designs. This has been a growing trend in 2019 and will continue to grow in 2020 across all areas of print design, the web and especially in animation.

  1. Pattern and textures

Patterns are making a huge comeback in 2020, especially in web design. Used in less traditional ways, with more than one pattern used in the same design, or sections of pattern overlaid, can create some very eye-catching looks.

We understand that good design is an essential part of a successful brand story. Find out more about our creative services here.
